Church Musician Position

Nederland Community Presbyterian Church has a recent history of fine music both as part of its Sunday worship as well as by way of the concert series it houses through the Mountain Community Music and Arts Association (MCMAA). NCPC is currently seeking an accompanist who can continue to develop our music program.

The staff church musician is responsible for the core of our Sunday worship service. For a small mountain church, NCPC has a remarkable amount of musical talent and a congregation that shows great appreciation for these musical gifts. Although our choir is largest and strongest during the summer months when seasonal residents are present, our choir sings throughout the year and music remains a very important part of our services.

Our worship services include traditional hymns from the Presbyterian Hymnal, but also include more contemporary music, often led by a guitar and flute group. The ability of the church musician to improvise with the guitar/flute ensemble would be a significant component. Our minister is trained and has served as a church choir director for over 15 years, yet works very well as part of a team with the church staff musician.

During the winter months choir rehearsals are minimized, but the choir continues to participate in worship on most Sunday. As we prepare for the Christmas Season, mid-week rehearsals usually begin in November through Christmas Eve, but dates and times are negotiable.

NCPC worship begins at 10:00 AM on Sunday morning. On Sunday's when the choir sings, warm-up rehearsal begins at 9:00 AM. The minister sends the services music to the staff musician at the end of the week. Service music selected by the minister usually includes either traditional or more contemporary hymns, liturgical responses, the anthem if the choir is singing. The staff musician is responsible for selecting the prelude, offertory and postlude and getting the information to the minister by mid-week.

Church Position Continued.....

Our small church is blessed with a beautiful Charles Walter baby grand piano, which is a pleasure to play and to hear. The Charles Walter is the centerpiece of our MCMAA Concert Series. Our church accompanist is welcome to use the piano for rehearsal, recital or teaching whenever there is not a conflict with other church programs. Also, the church staff musician is offered any opportunities for weddings or memorials at the church for an additional stipend.

The staff church musician is responsible for music at all scheduled services; participates in planning worship services as a member of the Worship Committee; participates in any additionally scheduled staff meetings; helps facilitate any music needed by the children/youth music programs; reports to the Pastor as well as the Moderator of Worship; encourages community musical events at the church; is subject to any background check in accordance with the policy of the church; is expected to give notice if unable to fulfill the required duties and is responsible for securing a substitute. Our church currently has two members who can serve as substitutes on Sunday mornings when the regular accompanist is otherwise unavailable, but usually require notice ahead of time.

The church is located near the RTD bus station in Nederland, so it is often convenient to use that service from Boulder to Nederland. The position also offers a travel stipend in addition to the regular compensation.

If you are interested in the position and would like to apply, or have further questions, please feel free to contact us. Our minister and the Worship Committee would enjoy hearing from you.

Worship Pianist
Rosalie Bargmann

Raised in a musical family, Rosalie has played the piano since her earliest memories. Her mother, Agnes Loeppert Bargmann, with a degree from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, taught piano and played the piano and organ for fifty years at Elmwood Park United Methodist Church, on the western edge of Chicago.

Following her initial piano training at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Rosalie completed four more years of piano study at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Two of her more influential teachers were Helen Watson and Hans Heniot, who had known and worked with George Gerswin.

Rosalie was the pianist/organist for six years at the Homewood, Illinois United Methodist Church, and taught public elementary school for five years in Illinois and in Michigan.

As a member of the Michigan Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association, Rosalie maintained a piano studio for twenty years with the Ann Arbor Area Piano Teachers Guild.
Trained in the Suzuki Method, she uses a variety of approaches to reflect the individual needs of each of her students.

With her ongoing instruction of piano students in the mountain community, Rosalie considers it a high professional honor to play the Charles Walter piano in support of the music program at Nederland Community Presbyterian Church.
